Shooting Ranges

The Townsend Rod and Gun Club has three shooting ranges:

  • 100 yard rifle range
  • 50 yard handgun range
  • Action shooting range

Safety is a top priority and rules must be followed by all members and guests.

Shooting is allowed daily from 9AM to sunset. Sunset tables are posted at the range.

General Action Shooting Pit Safety Rules:

  • ALWAYS keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.
  • ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.
  • ALWAYS keep the gun unloaded until ready to use.
  • Proper ear and eye protection required, especially when firing at steel targets
  • Familiarize yourself and use the down range warning system at the ranges
  • There are no fixed shooting positions. The shooter may fire from anywhere within the bay as long as all safety and range rules are observed. You are responsible for every round fired and every round must safely impact into the berm.
  • If shooting with a group of people, Members may move the shooting line forward to provide close-in shooting of targets at the backstop, however, all shooters must shoot from the same firing line.
  • Drawing from a holster is allowed BUT it must be done in a safe and controlled manner. No “Fancy gun play” firing from the hip, or Quick Draw is allowed.
  • Everyone in the Action shooting pit must use eye and hearing protection any time shooting is going on.
  • The 180 Rule: This rule states that the muzzle of a gun, whether loaded or not, may NEVER point up-range of the shooter. If one is in the center of a bay facing directly at the center of the backstop, the muzzle of his gun may never point more than 90 degrees to his left or right.
    • When walking uprange, firearms must be pointed either straight up or straight down.
    • NEVER point a firearm at another person regardless of the condition the firearm is in.

You may shoot at:

  • Paper/Cardboard targets placed on proper frames, placed at the back berm, at least knee-high and no more than head-high. All bullets must impact the berm.
  • Steel Targets that are placed on the range by the Action Shooting Committee.
    •   NOTE: Minimum safe distances for your specific caliber must be observed. See list of permitted calibers below.
  • No other targets are allowed unless they are approved by the Action Shooting Committee.

Action shooting ranges are intended for action shooting sports such as USPSA, IDPA, 2 Gun, 3 Gun or Steel Challenge activities.  Certain stated rules may be suspended during practices or competitions with approval of the Action Shooting Committee and under direct Range Officer supervision.  All questions should be directed to the Action Shooting Committee.

This range is used extensively for training and competition.  The range will also have a rotating schedule for the use of rimfire cartridge only.  Members should check the Club calendar to determine if the range is open for the individuals intended use.
